What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils or essences extracted from plants to support wellbeing.
These essences coming from the plant body, for example the leaves, stem, bark or flowers. These are then extracted using distillation or expression and are significantly more concentrated than the whole plant they come from.
They work in a couple of ways, physically to heal, balance or rejuvenate the skin and they also work on an emotional level via the limbic system and can influence how you feel, be it calm, balanced, uplifted or more grounded.
The Importance of “Therapeutic Grade“ Essential Oils
Here at Sodashi, we have always formulated using 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oils that are harvested and distilled with care. This is because high quality essential oils are complex and each contain unique compounds. They are readily absorbed by the skin and support the skins natural processes in all sorts of ways. In addition to their physical impact, they have an added benefit of also soothing the nervous system and supporting your emotional wellbeing.
How does this happen? What is the pathway from aroma to emotion?
When you breathe in essential oils, the molecules of that essence are absorbed by your olfactory nerves which is then communicated through the limbic system in the brain. This is the emotional centre where our feelings, responses and memories are processed.
The body will then respond in subtle ways. The nervous system will settle and messengers that effect how we feel will be released. This is why a response to a scent - like calming or uplifting feelings, can be so immediate, yet feel gentle - almost as if it simply washes over you.
