Do people with oily skin types need to avoid oil in skincare?
It’s a common misconception that if you have oily skin, you must avoid skincare containing oil at all costs. It was previously believed that oil in skincare blocked pores and made oily skin worse, and if you have oily skin - the thought of applying more oil might feel wrong. However, the truth is that “the right oils” will in fact help balance your skin and can be very beneficial.
Why is my skin oily?
Oily skin occurs when your sebaceous glands found in the deeper layers of your skin are overproducing sebum (natural oil).
Your skin needs this oil to keep your skin healthy. Its job is to keep moisture locked into the skin and act as a barrier to environmental factors.
Too much oil or an overproduction can be caused by; your genetics, hormonal changes, over washing your skin or perhaps if you live in a hot or humid climate.
Excessive oiliness can then lead to clogged pores, breakouts and an overly shiny look - which is not ideal.
Which oils should I avoid and which are the right kind for my oily skin?
Rich oils that are comedogenic (clog pores) like Coconut, Olive and Linseed. These oils contain beneficial nutrients but don’t absorb quickly and have a heavy texture. These types of oils will sit on the surface of your skin, trapping oil and dirt which can lead to breakouts.
Recent research shows choosing oils that are lightweight, fast-absorbing and non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) suit oily complexions much better. Often these types of plant oil mimic or are very similar to our own natural oil or sebum.
Three oils Sodashi uses for oily and blemish-prone skin are Hazelnut, Jojoba and Rosehip Oil.
Let's dive into these skin saving oils and how they help oily skin...
-
Hazelnut Oil from the pressed kernels is lightweight and absorbs quickly leaving the skin feeling soft but not greasy. It has a slight astringent action which helps to cleanse pores and balances oil flow making it perfect for oily, combination or acne-prone skin. As a bonus, it’s also naturally packed with vitamins.
-
Jojoba Oil another winning choice for oily skin. Coming from the pressed seeds of the jojoba plant, which look like a large coffee beans. It’s a lightweight non-comedogenic fluid wax that closely matches your skin’s sebum. This similar profile means it can trick your skin into producing less oil, helping to balance your sebum production. It also has antibacterial properties and contains myristic acid which acts as an anti-inflammatory.
-
Rosehip Oil ours coming from Rosehip seeds grown in Chile, is non- comedogenic and lightweight. Rosehip oil is a natural source of Vitamin A which helps to fade post breakout marks and scar tissue by boosting skin regeneration. It’s also packed with essential fatty acids in particular linoleic acid which oily skin tends to lack. By restoring the level of this essential fatty acid, Rosehip oil helps minimise skin congestion.
For oily skin types, choosing the right plant oil really matters. Natural skincare specifically formulated with oily skin in mind can reveal your most healthy balanced complexion.
