A Beginner's Guide to Dry Body Brushing

By Rebecca Robertson | Global Training & Development Consultant, Sodashi Skincare

Some at-home skincare practices awaken the skin and make you feel amazing, dry body brushing is definitely one of them. Using Sodashi’s Body Brush is a simple yet great practice you can introduce to your daily routine. It’s the ideal moment of self-care that awakens the body, supports the circulation and lymphatic system, removes dead cells and softens the skin - what’s not to love!

What is Dry Body Brushing?

Dry Body Brushing involves sweeping upward strokes using a natural bristle brush starting at the feet and moving up the body towards the heart. Today across the worlds destination spa’s dry body brushing is widely used, but the ritual is far from new, it is over 5000 years old and has deep roots in Ayurveda.

In Sanskrit it’s called “Garshana” and was traditionally performed using natural bristle brushes or linen gloves to energise and stimulate blood flow.

Let’s talk about the incredible benefits…

  • Exfoliates and Smooths – removes dead skin cells and smooths unwanted dry areas. Skin feels softer, smoother and more youthful.

  • Detoxifying - will encourage your lymphatic system, helping the body to release toxins more effectively.

  • Better Circulation - stimulates blood circulation in the tissues which oxygenates the skin and leaves you feeling energised.

  • Better absorption of products - Enhances absorption of moisturisers, oils and creams when used as part of a ritual

Dry Body Brushing is also beneficial after periods of travel, and the compact size of the brush makes it easy to take it with you wherever you go. Sodashi’s Body Brush is made from luxurious walnut wood and natural vegan sisal bristles. The bristles come from the leaves of the agave sisalana plant which give a firm yet gentle exfoliation.

How to Body Brush

Start with skin dry, before a shower or bath.

  • Step 1
    • Always brush towards your heart. Begin at the foot and ankle heading towards your hip. Using the brush move up your body with long, light sweeping strokes, follow each stroke with your hand to soothe.

  • Step 2
    • Use upward circular motions on the stomach to aid digestion and further enhance circulation.

  • Step 3
    • Move to your arms. always brush up towards the armpit. Start at the hand, brush towards the elbow and then up to your shoulder/armpit area.

  • Step 4
    • Ensure you brush every area on the body you can reach, working towards the heart.

Things to be aware of

Use lighter pressure in areas where your skin is thin and firmer pressure on tough areas like the soles of your feet. Avoid brushing if your sunburnt or have broken irritated skin.

For best results, follow your body brushing ritual with a warm shower or bath and then apply your favourite Sodashi body lotion/oil or cream to deeply hydrate and replenish the skin.

Personally, I find the Enlivening Body Lotion the ideal choice for the morning. It delivers the perfect amount of hydration and contains Cypress and Lemongrass botanicals that further support my body’s lymphatic flow and the whole ritual leaves me feeling energised and ready to tackle the day.
